Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Crawley is Tim Lunnon.
I’m very honoured to stand before you as Labour's parliamentary candidate for Crawley. I live and work in Crawley, and also serve it as a local Councillor for Broadfield South. On the council I serve as the chair of the Budget advisory committee. In this role we’ve seen the council run a balanced budget since Labour took control and deliver amongst the lowest council tax rises in Sussex.
I work full time as an engineer at Virgin Atlantic in Manor Royal. Day to day I have to solve complex problems. If elected I would use these skills to get results for Crawley residents, both in individual matters and on the problems facing the country.
The biggest issue facing this country and our town is Brexit. The Airlines and Airports at Gatwick, and the industries in Manor Royal all rely on Europe for trade, and a Hard Brexit at all costs approach could be very harmful to the towns businesses, and local people’s jobs. Crawley needs a Brexit that gives us the opportunity to continue to grow and prosper as we have since the town was founded 70 years ago. Unfortunately our current MP is determined to burn our bridges with Europe, and his views have seen UKIP pledge to support him and not run a candidate. If you want a measured Brexit that takes back control but doesn’t threaten our future then vote for me.
We have a real housing crisis on our hands. Younger generations are having to live with their family longer, or move far away to be able to afford a home. As a Local Councillor I’ve helped to plan for 1250 new council houses in Crawley. But we’ve built up to our borders now and need to expand the boundaries of Crawley to allow more homes. Nationwide Labour will build 1,000,000 new homes over the next five years; ensuring future generations for years to come can also own their own home or rent a home at a rent you can afford. Labour have proven locally we’re willing to take tough decisions to get more houses built, so vote for us nationally to see a real solution put in place.
Schools in Crawley are considering running a 4 day school week, in answer to the funding crisis they are suffering. Rather than put more funds into Crawley’s schools, the conservatives are wasting money on vanity education projects. Free Schools, new exam schemes and socially divisive Grammar Schools, which brand most children a failure at 11 years old, are distracting teachers from getting on with their job: delivering the best education for your children. If elected I will fight for stability in Education, instead of gimmicks. A Labour Government will provide free school meals for primary school children.
If you elect me as your MP, I promise I will always put Crawley first, just as we have done at Crawley Borough Council. I’ll only vote for sensible budgets, and will fight for a Brexit that works for Crawley. I’ll get more homes built, and defend our local schools from budget cuts. Labour are working for the many, not the few.
