Rory Fiveash

BW_KS_RoryFiveash.JPGBoth sets of my grandparents came to Crawley in the 1950s and have lived here ever since. I'm glad they did – it meant I grew up in Crawley. It has always been a great town for families and now I have my own here.

One of the great things about our town is the open feel to our neighbourhoods. We are a prosperous town with (thankfully) low unemployment, but this does mean people want to come here and stay here with their families, just as my grandparents did. Crawley has a great mix of cultures and this is something we should all be proud of, Crawley is the most inclusive towns I have ever been to.

I attended school in Langley Green and Ifield, I must admit that I did not leave school with many good qualifications but my appetite for learning has never been quenched. I went on to study I.T and later taught beginners I.T classes for the elderly. I am a member of the Royal Institution of Science and avidly follow their christmas lectures for children, making science engaging and interesting for young people. I am now self-employed and run a successful internet based business which sells products to customers around the world.

My business does not make lots of money and I have six children, over the years we have struggled financially like many other families in Crawley. There have been times when we have relied on benefits and, like many others, I am eternally grateful that the welfare system exists - its not perfect but its better than nothing. I believe that for many people this is real life and that that is what qualifies me to work for similar families.

Over the last five years we have all felt the strain of government cuts and it was talking to other parents who have been hurt by this government which motivated me to put myself forward for election on behalf of the Labour Party.  In May 2014 Labour took control of Crawley Borough Council and since then Crawley Labour have made many changes to the way our council is run and the vision and focus for our town has changed for the better. This has reinforced my belief that Labour is the way forward not just locally but nationally as well. It is shocking the amount of damage that has been done by the current government and it will take many years for the ordinary working family to forget how they have been hurt by this government.

West Green is an amazingly diverse area of Crawley and there is a lot of history there, if elected I will work tirelessly on behalf of the residents to ensure that they are not forgotten and that our towns history is protected. I am aware of issues which have blighted the area for many years which have never been properly looked into and I promise that I will make sure these are addressed. I intend, if elected, to ensure that West Green continues to have first class representation on the Council. I will also be a voice for ordinary people who want to see a government that works for them.
